  • Årsenhet i matematikk

Hun tildeles prisen for sin masteroppgave «A scientific dive into meromictic lakes: Microbes and stratification as determinants of greenhouse gases», der hun har studert klimagasskonsentrasjoner og miljø-DNA i flere innsjøer gjennom en årssyklus.

I år kreerer UiO to æresdoktorer fra Det matematisk-naturvitenskapelige fakultet:

Vennlig hilsen Solveig Kristensen, dekan

English translation follows:

Welcome back to the fall semester!

Blindern came back to life in week 33, with the start of the semester for over 1800 new students at our departments. Our 350 buddies did their utmost to welcome them, excellently led by buddy coordinator Synnøve Helgesen from the Department of Informatics. The study programs have organised their introductory events, with far more alcohol-free and alcohol-focused-free events than before. This is extremely important for creating comfort and safety for our new students, and something we greatly appreciate in the faculty leadership! A successful joint event was RealStart, where lightning talks by some of our best lecturers filled the auditoriums to the brim. Thank you to buddies, lecturers, organizers, and all staff and students who have contributed to a good start to student life at UiO!

This Year’s Admission Numbers

This year, we have an increase of about 6% in the number of YES responses to study offers via Samordna opptak and a full 12% to our 2-year master’s programs. This is a very positive development! Over a longer period excellent work has been done at all levels at UiO with academic and administrative educational development, communication, and student recruitment. The institutes have put in a lot of effort during the semester start to offer courses to the students. We are now eagerly awaiting the numbers that show how many have actually registered for the semester. These numbers will be available shortly after September 1st.

New Study Options

Department of Mathematics has made comprehensive changes to its educational portfolio and is offering three new bachelor’s programs and a new one-year unit this fall – all with good enrollment:

  • Mathematics: Theoretical and Applied Mathematics
  • Mathematics: Data, Modeling, and Computations
  • Mathematics: Finance, Insurance, and Economics

One-year unit in Mathematics

The 2-year master’s program in Informatics: Information Security, has been restructured from the fall of 2024 into a program with two study directions: a new option in Security in Cyber-Physical Systems, which is supervised by the Department of Technology Systems, and Information Security, which is supervised by IFI. Educational collaboration between our institutes in this way is something we want more of, and we are eagerly anticipating the outcome of the faculty’s new study options!

Honor and Glory

We are very proud of our student Christine Riis-Pedersen, who is one of three winners of this year’s sustainability award at UiO. She is awarded the prize for her master’s thesis “A scientific dive into meromictic lakes: Microbes and stratification as determinants of greenhouse gases,” where she has studied greenhouse gas concentrations and environmental DNA in several lakes through a yearly cycle.

Christine will receive the prize at UiO’s annual celebration on September 2nd in the University’s Aula. In addition, more honor and glory await the faculty with the following awards:

  • UiO’s Research Award to Professor Ingunn Kathrine Wehus and Professor Hans Kristian K. Eriksen at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics
  • UiO’s Education Award to Associate Professor Omid Mirmotahari at the Department of Informatics
  • UiO’s Innovation Award to Professor Svein-Erik Hamran at the Department of Technology Systems
  • H.M. The King’s Gold Medal to Ph.D. Johannes Røsok Eskil from the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics

Congratulations to everyone!

The University of Oslo has awarded honorary doctorates (doctor honoris causa) to prominent academics since 1902. This year, UiO is conferring two honorary doctorates from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences:

Emmanuelle Marie Charpentier is the director at the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens and a professor at Humboldt University in Berlin. She is appointed honorary doctor for her work in genetics and molecular biology. Together with Jennifer A. Doudna, she received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020 for developing the CRISPR/Cas9 system into a tool for precise gene editing.

Irena Hajnse is a professor of Earth observation and remote sensing at ETH Zurich, scientific coordinator for the German satellite system TanDEM-X, and head of the Polarimetric Radar Interferometry research group at the German Aerospace Center. She is appointed honorary doctor for her outstanding scientific work that forms the basis for estimating environmental parameters and requirements for the design of future radar satellites in applications such as permafrost, glaciers, disaster management, agriculture, and climate change.

I look forward to celebrating our award winners and honorary doctors at the annual celebration!

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Arendalsuka
Earlier this month, Arendalsuka took place. The higher education sector was heavily represented, and our faculty participated with four events:

Our newly started SFF Integreat invited to a discussion on “How to use MORE AI in Norway?” together with UiT, the Norwegian Computing Center, and Oslo Science City, to look more closely at specific challenges and possible solutions to get society to use more artificial intelligence (AI) – at a faster pace.

The faculty organized “Quantum Technology: Where does Norway stand?” in collaboration with SINTEF Digital, FFI, and Oslo Science City. The discussion focused on what Norway is doing in quantum technology, what we should do, and the consequences if Norway is not prepared in this area.

In collaboration with SINTEF Digital and contributions from UiO:Energy and Environment, the faculty organized “Artificial Intelligence – Environmental Villain or Solution?”, with an introduction to green informatics and a panel discussion on the business and society’s need for a green digital transition.

The Growth House for Value Creation, at the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, organized “The Health Industry from A to Z – How to succeed in realizing the roadmap,” in collaboration with Aleap, Health2B, Melanor, the HealthOmsorg21 Council, Oslo Science City, Norway Health Tech, Oslo Cancer Cluster, The Life Science Cluster, Inven2, and the Research Park. A united innovation ecosystem provided input to the government’s roadmap for the health industry and will contribute with concrete measures.

Thank you to everyone who helped realize these great events! I believe it is important that the faculty is well represented at Arendalsuka, with our academic strength in very important areas for society and business, and not least in shaping policy.

With this great start to the semester, I wish everyone a wonderful autumn!

Best regards, Solveig Kristensen, Dean
